This is a rare hazel species, also reaching medium tree size, but more upright in shape than C colurna and this one does not sucker either. Toothed edged leaves decorative the tree from Spring to late Autumn, when the very spiny fruits open and reveal the 1cm wide edible nuts (5-10/fruits). This species is also very tolerant,  will thrive in most types of soil and prefers slightly alkaline soils. but can be grown on slightly acidic, neutral or alkaline pH. Make a great bonsai too.
