Description:

Witch Hazel hybrids are crosses between the Chinese and the Japanese Witch Hazel. Their flowers are usually larger than the species and there are more flowers on the stems. Our plants are 1 year old seedlings (rarely offered) raised from seeds of the cultivar 'Arnold Promise' with large, yellow flowers. As the mother plant was open pollinated, seedlings can be different from its parent(s) but they will all grow to a medium-large shrub and will produce spidery flowers on bare branches from late January to February-March. Flower colour may vary from one plant to another. Our plants are not grafted and they will start to flower from 2013, so you can buy it much cheaper than a grafted, older plant. Until the first flowers, you can enjoy its stunning autumn coloration. Our plants are also ideal as starter bonsai, they branch out freely if pruned or for someone who does not mind to grow the plant a little longer before plantinrg out into the ground. Flowers are most effective if they can be viewed against a darker background, a brick wall for example. Witch Hazel won't tolerate very alkaline soil or waterlogging in Winter and will grow best in a moderately fertile, free draining, slightly acidic soil, ideally in light shade or a sunny position with partial shade, but too much shade will reduce flowering. Usually pest and disease free.
