Description:

Another handsome evergreen shrub with dark green leaves, this one is also called Sweet Box. This plant too produces delicate flowers between December and February with a powerful honey-like fragrance. The heady perfume carries some distance - very welcome in the drab days of winter. They are easy to grow, somewhat drought tolerant and a little taller, 1-1.2m, they even make good shrubs for patio pots where the fragrance can savoured. Also superb as specimen plants, ground cover or low hedges when established. Can be pruned. Named after Sir Hooker, director of Kew Gardens, London, this plant is another lovely compact, Winter flowering, evergreen shrub. Somehow rhizomatous, thicket-forming and suckering, it may cover several square meters in a few years. The strongly fragrant white flowers (appearing in Winter) are borne on green stems, among the lance-shaped (5-10cm long), dark green, evegreen leaves. The flowers are followed by small, spherical, blue-black fruits which are showy right until late Autumn. Prefers humus rich, moist soil in partial or full shade but it is quite drought tolerant. The fruits ripen earlier, from October.
